We all have the same goal in the online world: get found on Google. Even more importantly, to end up on page one in online searches. There are a plethora of ways to end up at the top of a Google search, but the best way is to interact on the web via Google’s products; one of which being Google Authorship.
Google Authorship makes your posts feel personal. When someone searches for terms you’ve posted about and your content shows up in a Google search, your Google+ profile pic magically appears next to your work. Maybe it’s just me, but when a profile pic pops up along with a post, it tends to add a little credibility to the post. It acts as proof that a real person created that content.
You may be wondering why credibility matters if it’s not a given you’ll be found in a Google search. Well, by linking Google Authorship with your Google+ profile, you’ll be showing Google that you’re a real person with content and information to share with users that’s helpful and relevant. In other words, it’s their way of checking to make sure you’re a real business and that you know what you’re talking about.
One Google user and Internet Marketing specialist, David Portney, decided to test out Google’s method for checking up on sites that show up in searches. You can check out the full report of his findings here, but in short, he created an empty Google+ profile, linked it with Authorship and, voilà, his posts about nothing appeared. Not only that, but his posts continued to show up days later!
Now, this doesn’t mean you should go out and create a bunch of bogus profiles just to take up the entire first page of Google. You don’t want to make the giant angry because you’ll be exiled to page 40 quicker than you can say SEO trickery. However, what David’s test really shows is that it does pay off to use Google’s tools.
